Good Voice But....

Ever since I was a kid people have told me I had a "great voice".  I'll admit it was their compliments that inspired me to endeavor on a career in radio and it was their encouragement that gave me confidence to start working outside of the station as a voice over artist.

One thing I've learned over the past several years is that it takes more than a pretty voice, a region neutral accent and other people believing in you to succeed. I had to believe in myself and trust those around me.

I didn't possess all these qualities at first but over time, effort, failure and success I learned to take someone else's words (the script) and make them my own. To be honest, this has more to do with acting and timing than voice quality. With training this skill can be learned. But that still isn't enough.

Starting out I had to know what I didn't know. Sometimes that process is harder to go through than others. Once I let my ego go, I really enjoyed the challenge of meeting the expectation of a client. I take a lot of pride in what I do and I love what I do.

Realtors Sell with On Hold Messages

Selling Real Estate is a tough business. If you are a Real Estate Broker or Agent you know that I haven't just unveiled one of the great mysteries of our time. The market is tough and you employ every advantage when representing your clients, both buyers and sellers. But what methods do you employ when representing yourself? Business cards, Business card ads, community newspapers and maybe weekly showcase shows? All of those are great tools but you simply MUST NOT overlook your own On Hold Messages.

Your on hold messages can do so much more for you than your other advertising can do simply because the people who hear this advertisement are already interested in finding out more about you. A professional on hold message at your office can help increase the number of inquiries regarding special programs, incentives or even property listings while instigating follow up questions based on the information they heard while holding.

Messages on hold are a quality, affordable, impacting placement of your advertising dollars especially because the person calling your practice is interested in YOU and YOUR SERVICES. On Hold Messages: Myth of the GREAT VOICE

Is your company taking advantage of an auto attendant to route incoming calls? After hours, do you use a voice-mail service from your phone company? If so,what do you think of the results of that service and ask yourself, are you happy with the way it sounds? Did you have someone in the office with "a great voice" record it? If so, do you think "a great voice" is enough? If it could be better, what would it do for your business? How would it impact your bottom line?

Forgiveness

Mat 5:7 God blesses those people who are merciful. They will be treated with mercy!

One of President Abraham Lincoln's associates scolded him rather severely for being soft on his enemies. "Why do you insist on trying to make friends of them?" he chided. "You should be trying to destroy them."

To which Lincoln replied gently, "Am I not destroying my enemies when I make them my friends?" In speaking of those who were his enemies during the Civil War, Lincoln is reported to have said, "Insane as it may seem, I hold malice toward none of them. I have neither the time nor the energy in this life to hold that kind of resentment."

It's Easter weekend and I'm once again reminded and challenged to TRY and live my life as an example of Christ among us. It isn't easy, not for me and I imagine not for anyone, regardless of what they will tell you or even what you will tell yourself.

Few things can touch a persons heart, mind and spirit like a song. Over the last 10 years or so I have lost hope for the power of a song. That was until I heard the song "Forgiveness" by Peter Katz.

If I Had One Shot

If I only had one shot to tell people about who Jesus is, this song would do it perfectly.

I know that the church isn't real reliable but Jesus never leaves us.

A Good Christian?

I'm turning 41 and starting my 6th year as a full time comedian. Undoubtedly I started later in life than a lot of others who perform comedy. It is overwhelmingly a young persons game.

When I was 25, 26, 27 I was weighing heavily going into the ministry in the role of Pastor or Evangelist. I was encouraged to pursue this by several around me until they "discovered" that I didn't have a college degree. When they found that our I was told that I would simply be "too old" to start in ministry by the time I got my bachelors degree and seminary credentials.

If I would have started back to college studies at 28 and followed the usual path of studies I would have finished seminary by the time I was 34.

But I always wondered why all of that stuff qualified you for ministry. Does Christianity require those who pastor and teach about Christ to have a college degree? Is it a prerequisite for me to have a college degree to be able to understand and read God's word and then share it?

I don't know. My gut says no.

I do know that there is NOTHING of demerit to having a college degree at all. Academic study gives you the ability to have exposure too and dig into volumes of historical documents to sort out the twists and turns of the faith since the first century. But does it give you a key to seeing more truth? Does it allow you more common sense to understand what is being said?

I still wrestle with this and can see both sides of the coin, here is an example.

A Preacher at a church I recently performed at gave a message on the "Six Essential Steps of Being a Good Christian".

These six steps included reading the Bible, prayer, tithing, Wednesday night attendance, Sunday School attendance and telling others about Jesus.

This man was seminary trained with a Doctorate in Theology. In my not so humble opinion, that list is primarily, nonsense as it is heavy on "works" and light to nondescript on faith and legitimate substance. Certainly prayer and bible study are important in the life of a Christian but none of the "Six Essential Steps" listed will automatically make someone a "Good Christian".

Christianity cannot and must not be reduced to a list of activities.

Also, if there are "Good Christians" are there then also "Bad Christians"? Those who will just barely limp through because they didn't get the same amount of grace from the blood of Christ that has been portioned out to those people who are "Good Christians"?

The Christian faith is built on and sustained through nothing that you or I can do but simply on the one act of unselfishness by the one who has the right to be called "Good".

Why is it then that we as followers of Christ put so much effort into being perceived as "Good" when we know that at the end of the day nothing we DO will make us "More Christian" than simply Loving God and Loving our neighbor as ourselves.

If that means we simply buy a cup of coffee or open a door or encourage someone, then so be it. If that means we help a neighbor with their roof or shovel snow off the sidewalk, fantastic. Christ is in all of that as much as and potentially more than He is in the routine of being someplace just to convince others and ourselves what a "Good Christian" we are.

Am I off base on this? Would a couple of degree's correct me? Would I be more godly with a degree?

A Christian Marriage

My wife and I just celebrated our 20th Anniversary and while I would like to tell everyone it has been a "cake walk", I don't want to lie. It hasn't been. I also don't want to paint the picture that our marriage has been without "challenges" or as I like to call them, "REALITIES" because it has been full of those.

On January 9th, 1988 my wife and I made public our decision to live the rest of our life as "ONE". This is the way the Bible describes a marriage, that Two shall become One till death.

Today, divorce is not a popular issue but a very, very prominent one. And I wonder sometimes without judging the people in the divorce, if all of these marriages should have ended. Were the problems SO BIG that they couldn't be overcome?

I don't know.

I enjoy encouraging people to PRESS on in their marriages. A good marriage doesn't just happen. You have to work for it and sometimes even FIGHT for it.

One God or Another

Is it possible that we have many Gods in the Christian Church?

Sadly, a lot of times we do.

We worship the church that is growing and the pastor that leads that church. Of course there is also the worship minister who deserves to be worshiped for selecting arranging and preforming such beautiful music and then there are the singers and musicians who are so talented...then we worship the goosebumps we get when we hear a certain song and we worship that moment when FELT God was so near...we worship our traditions and we worship our friends and our feeling and almost as much as anything else our position in society and our possessions.

Unfortunately we don't recognize that we do this...I know I don't and it is troubling to me that I can be so blind to this sort of thing impacting my life so deeply and then also to see it many times as an acceptable norm of the "church".

I have done some soul searching and after many years of thinking I disliked the church and the Christian Music Industry, I have discovered that that isn't the case...I love the church and I love the people in the Christian Music Industry but I am convinced that the majority of those people are so busy pursuing their dreams or "call"...they've gotten so deep into the forest that they cannot see it because of all the trees in their way...so it is not DISLIKE it is grief.

I don't have it all figured out and I certainly have my own idols I am struggling to lay down but I want to be reminded of my idols...I want to be reminded that Only Christ can save me...I DO NOT WANT MY HEART TO BE DISTRACTED FROM OR DISOBEDIENT TO the one and only true and living god because it is enticed by another god.

It is not my purpose to point fingers at anyone or anything but I want you to ask God where your idols are and how to lay them down...I also want you to help me see my idols that may be blindsiding me and my walk. Above being a goof ball comedian or a radio guy or whatever else I have been in my life I want to be faithful to the one I owe everything and I want that for you too.

An Interview with Comedian Marty Daniels

At first glance when you study Marty Daniels' comedy, you might miss the significance of the man behind the laughs. Truthfully, he looks like any other comic, but his material is a journey. His on stage persona is not natural to anyone else but it just happens to be who he is. I guess some people are that goofy. His thoughts zig where others zag.

His wife, Trina, works as his Booking Agent, Manager, Merchandise Table "Volunteer" and Detail Person for each show. Currently she is putting together dates for a Fall-Winter 2007-08 tour that will take him to churches in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Tennessee. Until the tour starts Marty is performing single dates to keep his routine fresh while adding new material that will be featured on a CD/DVD combo to be released for Christmas 2007.

Recently Marty sat down for this interview with Erik Matthews anaspiring journalist currently attending THE Ohio State University.

Do people expect you to be funny?

Honestly? Yeah, I mean when I'm on stage, I hope so. When I'm offstage they probably just think "This guys a little strange." Most of the time, they're probably right. I am a little strange. Don't you think?

Why do you suppose people prefer comedy that's dirty or shocking?

I don't know that they do. Honestly what else is being offered to the masses? Take a look at the networks and Comedy Central. Sure, there's Brian Regan, Jim Gaffigan and a couple others that are clean but beyond that your scraping the bottom of the barrel again.

I recently saw one of your shows in a church and was surprised that you talked about grief. How do you talk about grief in a comedy show?

The first thing is that comedy is about being honest. Most comedy is born out of tragedy. Just because I am a Christian doesn't mean I'm any different. I like to say it is the human experience. For years I tried to be "The good guy" but frankly life was kicking my butt. I was locked into a place I didn't belong and finally I had to confess it to God and then allow him to move me from there and it was all rooted in grief.

On that level, I'm not so different than "normal people."

What's your material?

It's pretty universal. I guess my incredible hatred of cats would not be a uniting message to the folks in PETA but that's probably the only thing I can think of that anyone would be offended by. Beyond that I look for what EVERYONE experiences car troubles, home repair, weight issues, neighbors, family, you know?

What makes a good comedian?

Knowing when to say "WHEN." I know guys who have an hour and a half of material and every bit of it is funny but after the first 45 minutes to an hour the audience is ready to move on.

Do you have a stage persona?

Not really. When I walk out there I want people to see ME. Who I think is a guy that pretty much anyone can relate too.

I've been to comedy clubs where the audience is just ruthless, waiting for you to suck. Have you ever had that experience?

Not at all. everything I have ever done has worked. NOT! Honestly, Comedy Clubs and Churches are a lot alike in that respect and it is just as tough to be on stage when you feel like an audience is sizing you up. In that situation it is much harder to be funny. The one thing you can't force people to do is laugh. Unless you had a gun and then it would just be nervous laughs and those aren't fun at all.

What do you laugh at?

I like stories. To me, stories are funnier than any joke teller. Stories seem more natural.

Does humor evolve?

Sure. It's why we have Democrats and Republicans and Traffic Jams and Cell Phone humor. If it didn't evolve we'd still be talking about that crazy guy who thinks the world is round or that guy who thinks fire can actually be obtained.

I read the Drudge Report a couple times a day. I like it and other sites like http://www.TheOoze.com, http://MarkDaniels.blogspot.com and http://www.RockRebel.com.

Today one of the links on Drudge was to a story in the London Daily Mail which asked a profound question..."Would you wear a face bra?"...Initially I was pretty excited about the probability of a "Face Bra" but then I found out it is an anti ageing device for men and women to
lift and separate wrinkles on the face.

Ted Haggard Part Deux

I will confess that Ted Haggard has never had a huge influence on me. I bet a lot of people never knew who he was is prior to his very public disgrace this past week but I can tell you one thing, pretty much everybody knows about him now.

I don't doubt that his heart and passion for Jesus are high but I would say that even while doing so many GREAT things for the body of Christ that and the cause of Christ that his walk got off step. I am not throwing stones at Ted Haggard. I have gotten out of step with Christ before and it is clearly no fun.

Getting out of step is no fun because it humiliates you. It causes others to doubt the power of Christ to change us. It causes others to stumble and it causes division, a division that is sometimes under the roof of a house shared by a man and and a woman and sometimes under the roof of a congregation.

There are two things at play here as I see it.

Ted Haggard was revealed to be the image of Peter as the cock crowed three times...Peter denied Christ three times and then looked into the eyes of Christ...At least that's the way I've always envisioned it. He had to deny Christ every time he picked up a phone to call the escort service. Every time he uttered a word. Every time he went to the hotel and when he returned to his holy calling. Ted Haggard had a lot of times to deny Christ and to lie to himself. To the people around him and to his God.

Ted Haggard also revealed something I've written about before in a blog called the Judas Spirit of the Church.

Haggard is a person who was profiled in a film called "Prayer Camp" and while this picture was produced by non-believers it shows what I would call a negative portrayal of Haggards efforts to impact younger children for the cause of Christ by instructing them to impact the political landscape. Many times we in the church, like Judas, look for a political solution to a spiritual problem.

Often times our problems would be solved if we would simply shut up and live what we believe the Bible says. Instead we spend too much time flapping our gums, writing on websites and putting our thoughts out there by any means other than the LOUD WITNESS OF A CHANGED LIFE.

If you are married your first ministry is to your spouse. If things are not right at home you have no business going out the door to win others to the cause.

Ted Haggard swore that things were right at home with his wife...He called them "steady"...but that can't be true because when you are married according to the scripture two become one and if one is delving into sexual relationships outside of a relationship with their spouse and doing drugs, something is very wrong at home....There is something very unsteady in that house.

The roles of ministers and leaders of the church today have been so clouded that we have pastors pretending to be politicians and politicians masquerading as theologians...It is nonsense and an outrage and all the while the verbiage of FAMILY VALUES gets shoved deeper down the throat of our culture when the family in the church is going to hell.

Be on guard and let your loudest words be spoken in silence by the witness of your changed life and faithful marriage.
